Overview
The Space Marine Combat Patrol box from Games Workshop delivers a complete, ready-to-play force straight out of the packaging, giving hobbyists a self-contained slice of the Adeptus Astartes suited for smaller skirmish games as well as a launching point into full-scale Warhammer 40,000 battles. Molded in the crisp, high-detail plastic Citadel miniatures are known for, the kit typically bundles a mix of infantry squads, a character or sergeant model to lead them, and a heavier support option such as a vehicle, walker, or specialist unit, all sharing the chapter's iconic power armor silhouette, purity seals, and heraldic trim that make Space Marines instantly recognizable on the tabletop. Because the contents are curated to work together as a legal, balanced Combat Patrol force, the box removes the guesswork of list-building for newcomers while still offering enough tactical variety to keep the games interesting.
Assembly is straightforward but rewarding, with modular sprues that let painters pose weapons, heads, and heraldry to create individual-looking marines even within a uniform squad. The kit's design leans into the wargear swapping and customization Games Workshop is famous for, so bolters, chainswords, and special weapons can be arranged to match either the studio's suggested loadout or a hobbyist's own tactical preference. Surface detail on the armor plating, backpacks, and bases is sculpted with enough depth to reward drybrushing, edge highlighting, and washes, making the box a favorite subject for painters practicing chapter color schemes, freehand iconography, or basing techniques that tie the miniatures into a cohesive display army.
Beyond the models themselves, the Combat Patrol box usually includes datasheets or reference cards, unit stat information, and sometimes a small insert explaining how to field the force under current matched play rules, which streamlines the transition from unboxing to first game. This makes it a popular entry point for players new to Warhammer 40,000 who want an affordable, focused starting collection, while veteran hobbyists often pick it up to bulk out an existing chapter, harvest bits for conversions, or take advantage of the price efficiency compared to buying units separately. Whether the goal is competitive small-scale skirmishing, narrative campaign play, or simply building and painting a well-rounded squad of Space Marines, the Combat Patrol box is built to serve as both a satisfying standalone project and a foundation for a larger Adeptus Astartes army.

- Miniatures are easy to assemble, many parts are push-fit
- Includes everything needed to play small games out of the box
- High level of sculpted detail typical of modern GW kits
- Models are fully compatible with the wider Warhammer 40,000 range for expansion
What could be better
- Miniatures require assembly and painting to look their best, which takes time

- Limited unit variety compared to buying individual kits separately
- Price is high for newcomers unfamiliar with the hobby cost curve
- Some smaller components (like turret parts) can be fiddly to assemble
Hobbyist notes
Feedback from painters and players who use it.
Perfect starter box
This was my first ever Warhammer purchase and it did not disappoint. The models snap together cleanly and the included mission pamphlet let me play a game the same night I built them.
Great models, some assembly quirks
The Assault Intercessors are gorgeous and easy to build, but the Firestrike Servo-turret had some tiny parts that were a bit tricky to fit together. Still, overall very happy with the value.
Solid detail for painting
As someone who paints competitively, I was impressed with the sharpness of detail on these minis. They take washes and drybrushing beautifully.
Good value but bring your own paint
Just be aware you'll need to buy paints, glue, and possibly clippers separately. The box itself is a great deal for the miniatures alone though.
Our verdict
Excellent for starting a new army or game
The Space Marine Combat Patrol box is an excellent all-in-one package for players wanting to jump straight into Warhammer 40,000 with a themed, ready-to-play force. The miniatures are crisp, modern sculpts that assemble easily and look fantastic once painted, and the included rules pamphlet makes it simple to start playing small-scale games immediately. While it doesn't include paint or glue, and the unit selection is fixed, the overall value and quality make it one of the best starting points for new Space Marines collectors or anyone expanding an existing force.
