Overview
The Games Workshop Kill Team starter set drops you straight into the fast, tactical world of small-squad skirmish combat in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Rather than commanding vast armies, you control a handful of highly detailed operatives, each with distinct rules, weapons, and personalities, making every model and every decision matter intensely. This particular starter set typically pairs two thematically opposed kill teams, giving new players immediately playable forces straight out of the box, along with all the terrain, tokens, and reference materials needed to start battling without hunting down extra purchases.
Inside the box you'll find high-quality plastic miniatures on modern sprues, showcasing the crisp detail and dynamic posing Games Workshop is known for, ideal for both competitive play and dedicated hobby painting. The included rulebook is streamlined specifically for Kill Team, focused on close-quarters engagements, line-of-sight mechanics, and mission-based objectives that reward clever positioning over brute force. Alongside the miniatures and rules, the set usually contains a fold-out or push-fit terrain layout, ruler and measuring tools, activation dice, and datacards for each operative, so the tactical depth of the full game is available from your very first match.
For hobbyists, this starter set is an excellent entry point into miniature painting and wargaming because the model count is manageable, letting newcomers practice assembly, priming, and painting techniques without being overwhelmed by an entire army. The narrower focus also means each miniature can receive individual attention, from highlighting armor plates to adding basing details, turning the box into both a gaming toolkit and a hobby project. Whether you're drawn in by the lore-rich factions, the satisfying crunch of tactical skirmish rules, or the joy of transforming grey plastic into a fully painted warband, the Kill Team starter set delivers a self-contained, replayable experience that serves as a gateway to the broader Warhammer hobby.

Pros & cons
What we liked
- Excellent value compared to buying factions separately
- Push-fit miniatures require no glue for quick assembly
- Terrain doubles as scenery for Warhammer 40k games
- Rules are streamlined and easier to learn than full 40k
- High-quality plastic sculpts with great detail for painting
What could be better
- Miniatures still require assembly and painting for full experience
- Only two factions included, limiting immediate roster variety
- Some terrain pieces have fiddly small components
- Paints and glue not included despite need for some models
Hobbyist notes
Feedback from painters and players who use it.
Perfect gateway into 40k skirmish gaming
Picked this up after years of admiring Warhammer from afar. The push-fit models were forgiving for a first-timer, and the terrain looks fantastic once painted up. Rules take a session or two to click but are far less daunting than full-scale 40k.
Miniatures are gorgeous, terrain is a bonus
I bought this mainly for painting practice and wasn't disappointed. The detail on the operatives is superb for the price point, and having modular terrain gave me extra scenery for my display board. Highly recommend for hobbyists.
Great value but assembly takes patience
Solid product overall. The push-fit system works well but some smaller terrain pieces were tricky to snap together without minor damage. Still, for the price you get a lot of quality plastic and a fun ruleset.
Fun tactical game, wish there were more factions included
The core box is excellent for two-player games right out of the gate. My only gripe is wanting more variety without buying separate team boxes immediately. Otherwise, terrain and rules are top-notch.
Our verdict
Excellent for starting a new army or game
The Kill Team Starter Set is an outstanding entry point into skirmish-scale Warhammer gaming, bundling two detailed kill teams, modular terrain, and a comprehensive rulebook into one accessible package. Painters and gamers alike will appreciate the sculpt quality and tactical depth, though newcomers should budget for paints, glue, and additional hobby tools to get the most from it.
