Overview

The Citadel Contrast Paint Set from Games Workshop is a purpose built collection of paints designed to revolutionize the way hobbyists approach miniature painting. Unlike traditional acrylics that require multiple layers of base coating, shading, and highlighting to achieve depth, Contrast paints are formulated to deliver all three effects in a single pass. Each bottle contains a unique medium suspended pigment that flows into recesses and settles there, creating natural shadow, while pulling thinner on raised areas to produce an automatic highlight. This chemistry makes the set especially valuable for wargamers who need to paint armies efficiently without sacrificing a tabletop ready finish, and it also appeals to newcomers who want professional looking results without mastering complex blending techniques.

The set typically includes a curated range of colors spanning warm reds, deep blues, earthy browns, ghostly whites, and vibrant greens, all chosen to cover the most common miniature painting needs across various Warhammer factions and general fantasy or sci fi models. Bottles are clearly labeled with the Contrast branding and color name, and the paint itself has a distinct translucent, ink like consistency that separates it visually from standard Citadel Base, Layer, or Shade paints. Many sets also include a bottle of Contrast Medium, which allows painters to thin the paint further, mix custom shades, or extend the working time of the formula when working on larger models or intricate details. The included colors are designed to work directly over specific undercoats, most commonly Wraithbone or black, and the set often provides guidance on which primer pairs best with which colors to maximize the intended contrast effect.

Beyond raw pigment, this product represents a shift in workflow for miniature hobbyists, making it particularly popular among painters managing large scale armies for tabletop wargaming where time efficiency matters as much as final appearance. The paints apply smoothly with a standard synthetic brush, dry to a matte or satin finish depending on the color, and remain compatible with subsequent detailing using traditional Citadel paints for edge highlights or specific accents. Packaging is sturdy, with each bottle featuring the dropper style nozzle common to modern Citadel paint lines, reducing waste and mess during application. Whether used to quickly finish an entire squad for a game night or as a foundational layer for a more elaborate showcase model, the Citadel Contrast Paint Set remains a staple tool that bridges the gap between speed painting and quality craftsmanship within the miniature painting and wargaming hobby.

Pros & cons

What we liked

  • Drastically speeds up painting large armies
  • Great for beginners with no blending skill
  • Pools naturally in recesses for instant shading
  • Consistent, repeatable results across models
  • Minimal brush strokes on flat surfaces

What could be better

  • Can look flat without additional highlighting
  • Pots dry out faster if lids aren't sealed properly
  • Limited effectiveness over dark or non-Wraithbone primers
  • Some colors are pigment-heavy and separate quickly
  • Pricier per pot than standard Citadel paints

Hobbyist notes

Feedback from painters and players who use it.

Cut my painting time in half

I batch painted a 40-man Guard squad in a weekend using these. The recesses shade themselves and the colors are rich straight out of the pot. Absolute must for army painters.

Great over Wraithbone, tricky elsewhere

Works like magic on Citadel's grey primer but I tried it over black and results were muddy. Once I switched primers everything clicked. Docking a star for the learning curve.

Perfect for terrain and bulk units

Used the set on a big batch of Necromunda scenery. One coat, minimal cleanup, looks fantastic under a matte varnish. The Contrast Medium is clutch for thinning.

Good but pots dry fast

Love the pigmentation and speed, but a couple of pots thickened up within a few months even with careful lid closing. Still repurchasing because the time savings are worth it.

Not a replacement for layering

It's a fantastic base layer but competition painters expecting studio-quality highlights will still need traditional paints on top. Good product, just manage expectations.

Our verdict

Excellent for building a reliable colour library

Citadel Contrast Paint Set is a genuine game-changer for hobbyists who want tabletop-ready miniatures fast without sacrificing too much visual depth. It shines on army-scale projects and for newer painters, though veterans wanting competition-level finishes will still want to layer traditional paints on top for extra highlights and texture.
